Sclerotherapy Spider Veins

Are spider veins stealing your confidence?

Do you have unsightly spider veins that make you want to hide your legs on a hot Texas day?  Spider veins affect 1 in 3 women and are one of the top concerns for women.  You don’t have to feel like this any longer.  We can help you regain confidence to wear your favorite dress, shorts or swimsuit again.

Common causes of spider veins are genetics, pregnancy and standing or sitting careers.  Spider veins are groupings of red, blue or purple veins near the skin surface.  Despite being so small, often less than 1mm, they impact your life!  At Vitality Vein Care, we evaluate and treat spider veins with sclerotherapy.

How does sclerotherapy work for spider veins?

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of choice for spider veins. Advances in medications and injection technology have improved with time, lowering the risks, minimizing discomfort and yielding better results.

To fix spider veins, a microneedle is used to inject a sclerosing solution directly into the spider vein or feeder vein that leads to the spider veins. The solution flushes out blood allowing direct contact of the solution to the vein wall. The sclerosant solution damages the vein wall and your body will resorb the vein which fades with time. On average, two to four treatments are needed to achieve optimal results.

Any underlying vein disease should be addressed and treated prior to cosmetic sclerotherapy. Should there be no underlying vein disease, you can expect the spider veins to fade 70-80% upon completion of the treatment protocol.

Am I a good candidate for sclerotherapy?

During your comprehensive consultation at VVC, we will determine if there is underlying venous reflux that is contributing to or even causing your vein disease. One of our physician venous specialists will determine if sclerotherapy or another treatment is the best option for you.

How long are the treatments?

Cosmetic sclerotherapy sessions last 30-60 minutes. This depends on the number and size of your spider veins. Generally, two to four sessions are needed to achieve optimal results.

What results can I see?

With sclerotherapy vein injections at VVC, we expect a 70-80% reduction in spider vein visibility and intensity upon completion the treatment series. Spider veins may become more noticeable after the first treatment and will being to fade with subsequent treatments.

What is the downtime?

With sclerotherapy, you walk in and walk out after your office-based procedure and there is little to no downtime. You can return to your regular activities immediately. For best results, we recommend avoiding strenuous activity, hot baths, sun exposure and to wear compression hose for 14 days after treatment.

A few reminders:

  • You may notice bruising or itching at the injection site. This resolves quickly.
  • Your spider veins may look worse before they look better.
  • Tenderness at the injection site rarely occurs.

Risks of sclerotherapy include:

  • Trapped blood– When a segment of vein remains open between two sealed areas of vein. This is easily treated with needle evacuation at your next visit.
  • Pigmentation changes– May occur over the treated vein. Most often this resolves over time. Please let our staff know if you take iron supplements or have a history of poor scarring or pigmentation.
  • Matting– A red/pink bruise near the treatment area. This consists of many fine red or purple veins that may fade over up to a year. If you experience matting, we will evaluate for underlying vein disease and help correct it.
  • Micro skin ulcer– A rare skin breakdown (2-3mm) may occur. Though tender, it heals with local skin care with minimal to no scarring
  • Minimal to no scarring
