What exactly are spider veins?

Spider veins (telangiectasia) are small, red, blue or purple veins commonly found on the legs, but are found on multiple other parts of the body. They are typically one of three patterns—radiating out from a central point, tree branch-like or geometric straight lines. Spider veins can be painful and worsen without treatment.

How are spider veins treated?

At VVC, we determine the root cause of your spider veins to delay their recurrence. While they are not curable, spider veins are treatable with good cosmetic outcomes. We target the problem area by injecting a sclerosing agent that disrupts the vessel lining and shrinks the vessel. Cosmetic sclerotherapy is the worldwide gold standard to treat spider veins.

What to Expect

Spider veins generally are treated in one to three sessions. However, depending on the extent of telangiectasia, more sessions may be required. Upon completing your treatment regimen, you can expect a 70-80% reduction in visible spider veins. Periodic maintenance may be required.

What is the downtime?

Sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure. Aside from wearing compression hose for 1-3 weeks following treatment, you are welcome to resume your daily activities right away. The longer you wear your compression the better your cosmetic result will be.
